Low literacy is a much more common problem for adults in Houston than many people think. If you can't read, you're shut off from many of the simple pleasures - and basic rights - that readers often take for granted. Getting a driver's license... ordering from a menu... filling a prescription... completing a job application... enjoying a magazine... how would you do any of these if you couldn't read? Reading provides options; not being able to read closes doors. Literacy Advance offers free literacy classes to adults in the Houston community and is always in need of volunteer tutors. The Adult Basic Education (ABE) program is a significant part of Literacy Advance programs and assists English-speaking adults to learn or improve their BASIC reading and writing skills. Each ABE class is one-on-one: one tutor, one student - to allow the tutor to focus on their learner's specific needs. All our classes are student-centered, and part of the free training we provide to our volunteer tutors demonstrates how to talk to students about their goals - enabling tutors to truly center the classes around the individual they are matched with. You DON'T need prior teaching experience to be an ABE tutor! Literacy Advance provides all volunteer tutors with training, free of charge, and will assist you with ideas, advice and resources as you begin the exciting process of helping another adult learn to read. We ask all tutors of regular ABE classes to commit to 48 hours of tutoring, spread over 12 weeks (two classes a week for 2 hours each class) or 16 weeks (one class a week for 3 hours each class). If this time commitment is difficult or impossible, we have some more flexible opportunities available - please ask for more information!
