Each year, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Salt Lake City resettles nearly 500 refugees from around the world. IRC's PORTAL program is looking for volunteers to work one on one with newly arrived refugees. The volunteer will be responsible for aiding the refugee in understanding how to ride public transportation and helping them with any questions they may have about life in the United States. The PORTAL program provides a safe and supportive environment and would like the volunteer to do the same.

This is a great opportunity for college students or those interested in social work, international relations, or community development.

Currently the IRC is receiving refugees from Burma, Burundi, Somalia, Eritrea, Bhutan, Nepal, Iran, and Iraq.

Interested candidates should send an email to Brooke Blanchard (brooke.blanchard@theIRC.org).

Mission Statement

The International Rescue Committee serves refugees and communities victimized by oppression or violent conflict worldwide. Founded in 1933, the IRC is committed to freedom, human dignity, and self-reliance. This commitment is expressed in emergency relief, protection of human rights, post-conflict development, resettlement assistance, and advocacy.

Description

Each year, thousands of refugees are invited by the U.S. government to seek safety and freedom. Forced to flee conflict or persecution, many refugees have survived against incredible odds. Refugees step off the plane with next to nothing but their dignity, hope, and determination. In Salt Lake City, the IRC helps approximately 500 refugees each year to rebuild their lives.
