School Assistance For Refugee Newcomers (SAFRN) program

We are looking for volunteer tutors to work with refugee students (grades K-12) who are attending public schools in the Portland tricounty area and have lived in the U.S. less than one year. We currently have Afghan, Bhutanese, Burmese, Congolese, Cuban, Iraqi, and Somali students waiting to be matched with tutors.

Volunteers will spend 1.5 - 2 hours per week with their students, usually in the students' homes, helping with English, homework, English, and learning about American culture.

Volunteer training and support is provided. A free background check is required. If you would like to help refugee youth, while learning about a different culture and exploring your skills, please contact us. We would love to meet with you and give you more information about this project.
