About Project Literacy Massachusetts

Location:

123 Main Street, Watertown, MA 02472, US

Mission Statement

Project Literacy, a program of the Watertown Free Public Library, assists adult basic education learners, both Speakers of Other Languages and English speakers, by providing educational services that: 1) improve their ability to read, write, and converse in English; 2) help students gain access to community resources and services, 3) help them integrate into the community. We are creating a network in which adult learners, volunteer tutors, and teachers share their knowledge and experience to benefit all.

Description

Project Literacy provides much-needed adult education services at no charge to foreign-born and native-English speaking students who wish to improve their English speaking, reading and writing skills. We also guide adult learners to access community resources and services, and help them better integrate into the community. With the Waterton area home to people from many different backgrounds, Project Literacy has students from over 20 countries. Some are highly literate in their native language, but know little English. Others, who are American born, cannot read beyond an elementary level.
