Richmond Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is seeking volunteers to join in volunteer trainings in 2015. Help stop the cycle of abuse and neglect by advocating for safe and permanent homes for children. We have a critical need for volunteers to be a voice for a child in court. Richmond CASA is on automatic appointment to 100% of child abuse and neglect cases in the City of Richmond. A new training classes will begin in Fall 2015. Applications may be submitted at any time. Please contact Jana Blue at 646-0519 or jana.blue@richmondgov.com with any questions about learning to become a CASA. Visit our website at grscan.com/new-casa-volunteers.

Mission Statement

The Mission of the Richmond Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program is to help ensure that dependent, abused and neglected children live in safe and permanent homes. Richmond CASA pursues its mission by assigning carefully recruited, screened, trained and supervised community volunteers who are court appointed to work one-on-one with these children and their families.

Description

The Richmond Court Appointed Special Advocates program, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was established in April of 1990, with the assistance of the following organizations: Metropolitan Richmond Women's Bar Association, Richmond Juvenile and Domestic Relations (J&DR) Court and its Citizen's Advisory Council, and Richmond's Youth Services Commission. Richmond CASA is part of a nationwide network of CASA programs which has existed since 1977.
Richmond CASA is unique in its advocacy efforts in that volunteers are appointed by juvenile court judges who rely on them to act as their "eyes and ears", to ensure that the best interest of abused and neglected children is achieved. Richmond CASA provides a unique opportunity to allow citizens to have meaningful and immediate impact in the lives of children who live in the city of Richmond. The children assisted by this program are those who are referred by juvenile court judges, as a result of an abuse/neglect petition.
