ORGANIZATION: National MS Society - Gateway Area Chapter

Position Summary:

The student will assist in maintaining peer support program essentials and also be a part in developing curriculum for support group leader trainings, along with logistic planning. Assist in our Therapeutic Recreation Wellness program with some administrative work, but more focused on building relationships with vendors.

Responsibilities/Duties:

Peer Support:

  • Assist with follow up to clients interested in starting their own Talk MS Group (possibly including the following)
  • Initial phone call, assemble packet
  • Follow up for paperwork and next steps
  • Work with Communications Department sending out interest surveys and doing follow up
  • Interview and follow up with Talk MS Group leaders (possibly including the following)
  • Collecting personal stories, advice, story ideas, etc. For TMS newsletter
  • Assist in creating/producing TMS newsletter and distribution
  • Help plan and implement Leant & Network trainings for support group leaders
  • Attend Talk MS Groups as needed
  • Assist with Program in a Box ideas/projects
  • Other administrative duties as needed

Therapeutic Recreation Wellness:

  • Data entry for exercise class attendees
  • Assist with planning and implementing Wellness Resource Fair at Walk MS 2015, includes developing relationships with vendors and other logistics

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of or experience/interest in working with individuals with disabilities (preferred but not required)
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Office, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Great communications skills - listening and talking. Talking on the phone is a big part of this position - must be comfortable making calls!
  • Organization skills and ability to multi-task
  • Drive and initiative to take outline of project and make it their own - ability to work fast and efficient with little supervision
  • Desire to help and make a difference in the lives of individuals with MS

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to stand for extended periods and tolerate heat (not on a daily basis)
  • Position may require long periods of standing and carrying heavy objects (not on a daily basis)
Training/Orientation Provided:
  • An orientation to the agency and the internship
  • Training and education about MS
  • Clearly defined department priorities
  • Explanation of intern's scope of responsibilities. An intern work plan is drafted and signed by both the intern and supervisor at the start of the internship.
  • Ongoing support and supervision provided by agency staff
Evaluation:

At the end of the internship, the staff person supervising the internship fills out the Intern Evaluation Form and discusses it with the intern relating to his or her performance. The intern completes an Intern Exit Interview Form providing feedback regarding his or her internship experience with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society-Gateway Area Chapter. The intern hands in the Intern Exit Interview Form to the Volunteers & Development Coordinator in order to improve the practices of the internship program.

Time Commitment:

Based upon hours required by student's university. Internship to be completed during the regular business hours of Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 5pm, with the exact days and times to be determined according to intern schedule. Some weekends depending on program schedules.

Description

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society funds more MS research, offers more services for people with MS, provides more professional education programs and advances more MS advocacy efforts than any other MS organization in the world. Through its home office and nationwide network of chapters, the National MS Society provides assistance to over a million people annually in its continuing mission to end the devastating effects of multiple sclerosis.

Seeking volunteers to the MS cause is the very core of our business. Each year the Society organizes a series of community events that provide many opportunities for the enthusiastic volunteer. The Society offers four key fund-raising activities:

  • Bike MS
  • Walk MS

The Society also engages volunteers to help influence lawmakers at the federal, state and municipal levels toward legislation important to people living with MS. The Society is looking for passionate volunteers with expertise in areas such as:
