Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County

The Self-Help Centers are free walk-in clinics created to help people help themselves. Litigants receive one-on-one assistance with legal forms and information seeking legal recourse without a lawyer. The Center does NOT provide legal advice or representation. Rather, it is a resource center with information, books, and PEOPLE available to guide an individual through the judicial process.

The Center assists litigants with divorce, custody, visitation, eviction, parental rights, name change and gives out appropriate referrals.

As a volunteer, you will be working directly with litigants. You will be assisting litigants complete court documents for family law and housing law matters.

Our Centers are located in the following Court Houses: Van Nuys, Chatsworth, Lancaster, and Pomona. To apply please fill out our volunteer application and submit with your resume. You can find the volunteer application on our website www.nlsla.org and select "join us/get involved."

Mission Statement

Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA), a private, non-profit law firm, envisions a day when communities in Los Angeles are strong enough to decide their own destiny; where access to justice is not predicated on social economic status; and everyone has income security, adequate housing, quality education, healthcare and the opportunity to improve their own lives.

Description

Since 1965, Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLS-LA) has provided free legal services to low-income residents. We serve all of Los Angeles County, including the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys, the neighboring communities in the Pomona, Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys, and the cities of Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena. NLS-LA provides the highest quality services to its clients, individually and collectively. Our advocacy is directed towards both the needs of the individual client requesting legal assistance, and to clients who seek to enforce the broader rights of the low-income community. Equally important to NLS-LA is the development of self-help skills and other tools, which allow clients and client groups to solve their own problems and improve their lives and communities.
