Workers' Rights Centers provides a place for low-income workers to come to learn about their rights as workers, and to get help as they pursue legal claims to wages, unemployment benefits, and criminal records clean up. The Center provides self-help legal assistance to workers, through written materials and one-on-one interviews, helping people to understand their legal rights and analyze their legal options.
You can help at:
Glendale: Tuesdays (1st & 3rd) evenings 5 - 9 pm
El Monte: Wednesday evenings 5 - 9 pm
Pacoima: Saturdays 9am - 1 pm
Volunteer advocates interview litigants, calculate their claims, draft demand letters and declarations, and help litigants prepare for their hearings.
We particularly need advocates that speak Spanish, Mandarin, and Cantonese, but everyone is encouraged to apply.
The volunteer will be responsible for developing factual and legal arguments, writing a brief, preparing the litigant for the hearing, and developing direct and cross examination questions.
Volunteers must commit to two clinics per month for a semester.

Mission Statement
Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA), a private, non-profit law firm, envisions a day when communities in Los Angeles are strong enough to decide their own destiny; where access to justice is not predicated on social economic status; and everyone has income security, adequate housing, quality education, healthcare and the opportunity to improve their own lives.
Description
Since 1965, Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLS-LA) has provided free legal services to low-income residents. We serve all of Los Angeles County, including the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys, the neighboring communities in the Pomona, Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys, and the cities of Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena. NLS-LA provides the highest quality services to its clients, individually and collectively. Our advocacy is directed towards both the needs of the individual client requesting legal assistance, and to clients who seek to enforce the broader rights of the low-income community. Equally important to NLS-LA is the development of self-help skills and other tools, which allow clients and client groups to solve their own problems and improve their lives and communities.
