Refugee Family Mentor

Description
Refugees are legal immigrants who have fled persecution and war in their home countries. The US government invites some of these refugee families to come to Dallas and make a new life. Catholic Charities helps newly arrived refugees get settled, learn English, find a job and become self-sufficient in this new environment.
Become a part of the refugee resettlement process! Every month we receive new families arriving from all over the world. Our goal is to resettle the family and help them to become self-sufficient within the first 6 months. This is achieved through dedicated resettlement case management, education, cultural orientation, employment services, and the efforts of our volunteers and interns. You will be a great help as we work to provide services for newly arrived refugees. This is an extraordinary and enriching opportunity.
Newly arriving refugee families have to become acquainted with a new city, a new culture, a new economy, and a new language. Every refugee family needs a Family Mentor to help them transition to life in America. You can help by Mentoring/Befriending new arrivals - Volunteers will meet with a refugee family in their home and assist them to become familiar with the local community (i.e., bus transportation, grocery stores, library); assist families with managing household affairs (i.e., budgeting money, sorting mail, teaching minor house-hold repairs); and helping refugees practice their English language skills. Estimated time commitment:2 hours a week for a minimum of 4-6 months, days and times are flexible. No foreign language skills required. Refugee families come from many different cultures and countries, including Burundi, Afghanistan, Burma, Bhutan, Iran, Iraq, Ethiopian, Somalia, Sudan, and more. Catholic Charities serves refugees of all faiths.
