Teach older refugees English and civics

Description
Refugees are legal immigrants who have fled persecution and/or war in their home countries. The U.S. government takes accepts thousands of refugees each year. Catholic Charities helps newly arrived families get settled, learn English, work towards self-sufficient and eventually to become citizens. JOB SUMMARY: Help older refugee adults (60 and older) learn to speak, read, and write English -No foreign language skills are required- and tutor them in Civics. Refugees have only 7 years to become a citizen, which is accomplished by passing a citizenship test OR they risk loosing government benefits. We need people to tutor them in civics and basic English. The commitment is for 3-6 months, up to 3 hours per week. Times and days are flexible, once or twice per week, or more if you are available.
Skills
- Civics/ESL Teacher or Assistant: Patience and a desire to help others learn. No other languages or teaching experience required. We will provide training. You do not have to be Catholic to volunteer.
