Accounting Aid Society provides one of the nation's largest free income tax assistance programs for low and moderate-income families, seniors and others in need. We assist people with local, state and federal tax filings, as well as Property Tax Refunds, Earned Income Credits, Home Heating Credits, and Child Credits. We also provide information on tax rights and responsibilities, including help for those who speak English as a second language, and offer aid in resolving tax disputes with the IRS.
Each year we recruit more than 600 volunteers to help us fulfill our mission. During the 2019 tax season, more than $40 million was returned to more than 20,000 low and moderate-income households.
Our tax volunteers are specially trained using materials and instruction provided in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service, the State of Michigan, and the City of Detroit. Once trained, our volunteers give of their time at more than 23 locations in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Livingston counties during the January - April tax season, serving clients at libraries, community centers, social service agencies and other locations that provide space for the program.

Mission Statement
Our Mission Accounting Aid Society provides tax assistance and other services to promote the economic self-sufficiency of low to middle-income families, seniors and others in need through programs, volunteerism, and partnerships. More than 20,000 families received income tax refunds and tax credits in 2014 with the help of nearly 608 trained Accounting Aid Society volunteers. Since 1976, Accounting Aid Society has returned more than $24.1 million to low and middle-income residents in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Livingston counties, and in turn into our state's economy. We partner with local, state and federal government to coordinate customized training for our volunteers. We then place our volunteers at more than 20 sites in metropolitan Detroit in locations including libraries, community centers, nonprofit and for-profit facilities. We also partner with corporations and other groups who train together and volunteer to "Adopt-A-Site."
Description
Accounting Aid Society is the largest provider of free income tax preparation services for low and moderate income households in Michigan.
Each year, millions of dollars in tax refunds are unclaimed by those who need them the most.
We help struggling families prepare taxes and recover more than $24.1 million in refunds and credits each year.
In this way, we help families stay in their homes, keep their utilities turned on, put food on the table, and save for the future.
