- Volunteers are trained to help people keep track of their medical appointments and to find easy ways to follow through with home routines prescribed by their doctors. This may involve conversations over the telephone, going along to a medical appointment, explaining something in a way that relieves confusion, pleasant friendly visits. Each volunteer is matched up with one elderly home-based person. Many volunteers find it easy and rewarding to be assigned to more than one individual. Some flexible weekday time works best; the time frame can be adapted to work around your schedule.
- Volunteers are trained and always backed up by talented qualified professionals; a volunteer is a liason and a support, not a medical provider.
- "At Your Side" volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds. All share the same sentiments: the work is rewarding with the right amount of variety and volunteers very much enjoy the company of the individuals they help.
- The training is excellent and many talented professionals help with the ongoing educational piece of this program. Volunteers are supported by experienced advocates and group support is provided as well. This very special and in-demand volunteer role provides a wide-ranging educational experience as well as a richly meaningful way to spend free time and to "give back".
