Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center is looking for individuals who have an interest in sharing information that will empower patients to make informed health care decisions and improve health outcomes. Health Literacy volunteers work with patients in a variety of settings through out the hospital - those with a diabetes diagnosis and/or kidney disease primarily. The volunteer provides information sessions to groups and/or conducts one-on-one health literacy sessions. Health Literacy volunteers increase a patient's skills in areas such as understanding appointment schedules, the basic of navigating nutrition labels, understanding information listed on a prescription label, and managing multiple medications.

Description

Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, located in the East Flatbush section of Central Brooklyn, was founded in 1925 as a chronic care facility to serve the then Jewish Community within a cultural context. As the community has evolved and diversified, Kingsbrook has expanded its services and programs, to meet the needs of the large culturally diverse communities that it now serves.

Kingsbrook is an 864-bed medical training institution, comprised of a 326-bed acute care hospital and a 538-bed adult and pediatric skilled nursing long-term care facility. In addition to its celebrated David Minkin Rehabilitation Institute, Kingsbrook's Centers of Excellence include Brooklyn's only NYS licensed Traumatic Brain Injury and Coma Recovery Unit, and a Geriatric Inpatient Psychiatry service, a premiere program serving the mentally challenged elderly throughout the borough.
