FriendshipWorks needs Medical Escort volunteers to help take elders to or from medical appointments. Many elders are unable to make the trip alone due to age or disability, and need someone caring to provide support. This is a great opportunity for volunteers with weekday availability and flexible schedules. Volunteer on your own schedule! We need volunteers with and without cars. As a Medical Escort, you will have the satisfaction of helping a community member in need, and will also get the opportunity to meet some very interesting people!

The need for Medical Escorts is high! Currently, there are 62,237 older adults living in Boston. According to the 2000 Census, half the households in Suffolk County with a member who is 65 lack access to a vehicle. Research shows that non-driving elders get to the doctor 15% less than elders who do drive, often because they don't know how they'll get there, or lack support once inside the hospital.

You can fill out an application to volunteer online: http://www.fw4elders.org/volunteer/apply-online/

About FriendshipWorks

Location:

105 Chauncy St, Suite 801, Boston, MA 02111, US

Mission Statement

FriendshipWorks, formerly MATCH-UP Interfaith Volunteers, recruits and trains caring individuals to assist elders living in the Boston area. Our mission is to decrease the isolation that too often comes with age and disability, to promote well being, and to enhance the quality of life of elders. We have seen firsthand the difference ongoing companionship and support can make both for our care recipients and our volunteers.

Description

FriendshipWorks offers a variety of support services to elders in the Boston area. We make friendship matches between volunteers and elders. Volunteers often provide companionship, read aloud, take walks, or assist someone with errands. In addition to ongoing companionship, FriendshipWorks provides one-time assistance such as volunteer escorts to and from medical appointments and respite for family caregivers.
