Because of the complexity of the border region and the severity of need, the Migrant Resource Center is meant to serve a number of functions. These include: -Welcome and orientation for people who are being returned to Mexico -Provide information about resources and services available in Agua Prieta (shelters, churches, social service agencies, medical care) -Connect migrants with the appropriate groups and government agencies -Offer food, water and personal items (such as blankets, socks, etc.) to returnees -Educate migrants about the risks involved in crossing the desert -Interview migrants and document abuses that have taken place in the custody of U.S. authorities -Provide basic medical examination, first aid, and transportation to emergency facilities -Facilitate communication between migrants and their families Bear in mind that the majority of people who are returned to Agua Prieta are not familiar with the city, and do not know what resources are available to them. As a result of their journey, they are frequently tired, lacking in money, and possibly suffering from some level of trauma. Many have been separated from their friends and loved ones. The facility that we operate is just over the border and is approximately a twenty five minute walk from our living accommodations. We house volunteers in a trailer. While it is not five star accommodations, it more than does the trick. Our center is opened as long as we can find individuals to staff it. You will be acting as support staff for those permanent volunteers and, when necessary, taking the lead in handling different situations.

While a knowledge of Spanish and basic first aid would be very helpful for this volunteer opportunity, it is not a requirement. What we do require is people with a big heart who are looking to make a difference.
