ORGANIZATION: Allen Memorial Art Museum

The principal duties of a Guild volunteer will be in the areas of Visitor and Information Services at the AMAM. A small percentage of the volunteer duties will include community relations and special events (as they occur). As a volunteer, you will be a stakeholder in the organization, and engage directly in the museum's person-to-person interaction.

There will also be opportunities to serve as community docents at the Weltzheimer/Johnson House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Community Docents provide guided tours of the house and discuss its architecture, history, as well as the life of Frank Lloyd Wright and the history of the house as it relates to Oberlin. Special training will be required prior to serving as a docent, and forthcoming training sessions with be planned.

About Allen Memorial Art Museum

Location:

87 North Main Street, Oberlin, OH 44074, US

Mission Statement

The Allen Memorial Art Museum is founded on the belief that the study and appreciation of high quality original works of art is an indispensable part of an excellent liberal arts education. The Museum acquires, preserves, exhibits, and interprets its collections to promote the highest standards of visual literacy and encourage multi-disciplinary inquiry. Open free of charge to all, the Museum is a vital resource for the students, faculty, and staff of Oberlin College as well as Northeast Ohio and a national and international audience.

Description

The AMAM serves the teaching and research needs of students and faculty from all departments of Oberlin College, including both the College of Arts and Sciences and the Conservatory of Music, and maintains a close relationship with the college's art department (housed next door). In addition to supporting the academic curricula and scholarly enterprises on campus, the museum seeks to be a vital cultural and social center for the regional community. As the only fine arts museum in Lorain County, and indeed, in four adjacent counties (Erie, Huron, Ashland, and Medina counties), we are deeply committed to serving the needs of the non-academic population of our area. Through installations of our permanent collection, special exhibitions, new acquisitions, and related educational programming, we reach Oberlin undergraduates and faculty, K-12 students and teachers, and the general public across a wide socio-economic range (rural, urban, privileged, disadvantaged).
