Mission Statement
To give a second chance to homeless and other struggling men and women by providing moral encouragement and removing material barriers to self-sufficiency.
Description
The Second Chance Society is an integral member of the Continuum of Care for the homeless and struggling in Broward County, Florida.
Through the SCS Hand Up Program, Second Chance assists such persons in ther quest to attain self-sufficiency by helping them to overcome material barriers to employment. This is accomplished by providing tools, uniforms, safety equipment, work clothes, licensure, medical exams or other goods or services that may be required of an employer as a precondition of employment. In cases of homeless or struggling individuals who are enrolled in vocational training leading to certification or competency in a viable trade, and who have no other resource to obtain textbooks and school supplies, Second Chance provides these. Clients are normally referred to Second Chance by partner agencies. Clients are never given money by Second Chance Society. Contact is maintained with Hand Up Program clients for at least a year after services are initially provided, and through these contacts SCS continues to provide clients with encouragement in their struggle to realize economic self-sufficiency.
