For the most rewarding experience of your life, volunteer to teach an adult to read. We tutor Americans who have dropped out or graduated from high school yet are unable to read their own language, and foreign-born who want to become citizens or assimilate better into this culture. Your training as a tutor is only 15-18 hours, and you are asked to tutor at least one day a week (with a team tutor for another day) or spend two days per week with your student(s). Classes run 1 1/2-2 hours. Classrooms and days and time of tutoring are fitted to your schedule as much as possible. A team tests and matches up your students with others of like status, or pre-tests if you choose to tutor only one-on-one. Yearly conferences help with continuing education. Mentors always available after training. Vacations no problem--substitutes are available. Lessons are planned and provided for in the materials. Our students have gone on to higher education, better jobs, better lives, citizenship, and their children benefit vastly from their improved education. You'll feel that you are creating miracles every day. One of our recent students who just learned to read at 63 has taken his first road trip by himself (he can read the street signs), bought his own new furniture, accomplished so many new things that he tells us, like so many others, "You changed my life."

About South Bay Literacy Council
Location:

Mission Statement
Because we believe literacy is life-changing and empowering, we volunteer to teach adults to read, write, and speak English for free.
Description
The South Bay Literacy Council (SBLC) is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to teaching adults over 18 to read, write and speak English.
For more than 40 years, SBLC has provided group and individual tutoring in Torrance, Hawthorne, Gardena, Wilmington and other South Bay-Los Angeles communities. Since COVID-19 restrictions, we have been tutoring online.
Our training workshops equip volunteers to teach adults how to read, write, and speak English.
Headquartered in Torrance, the organization is an affiliate of ProLiteracy America. We are staffed and operated entirely by volunteers. The council relies solely on private sector donations and receives no government funding.
There is an urgent, ongoing need for more trained volunteers for tutoring and for management support. Be part of the solution and make a real difference in someone's life.
