Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) is the nation's foremost family-based organization committed to the civil rights of gays, lesbians, bisexual and transgender persons. PFLAG National was founded in 1973 by mothers, fathers, and siblings and has over 200,000 members and supporters in more than 500 chapters throughout the USA.
PFLAG Triangle, a local grassroots chapter was incorporated in 1982 by the founding members of this chapter. PFLAG Triangle serves all citizens in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. There are over 12 other local chapters within the state of North Carolina. PFLAG Triangle provides Services that range from Advocacy and Education to Support. Position Description
The Safe Schools Coordinator will spearhead the work in the local school systems of Wake, Durham and Orange. As members of the community we can combine our unique stories with relevant facts and information to create safe schools for all students. PFLAG's work in the school systems include:
- Providing Resources
- Information
- Speakers to help schools address the issues the LGBT students face
Specific Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
1 Primarily serve as the PFLAG Triangle Board of Directors Liaison to our 2 local student organizations
a. Wake Co GSA Booster Club
b. InsideOUT
2 Effectively communicate with youth of all ages through voice, electronic media, and other forms of communication.
3 Chair and oversee the Safe Schools Committee. (NOTE: This committee has not been established. This position will be responsible for forming, recruiting, and maintaining this committee.)
4 Research and learn each school system's policies and procedures and they may be different across counties.
5 Effectively work, coordinate, and report all Safe Schools items to the PFLAG National Safe Schools Coordinator (Suzanne Greenfield) in Washington, NC.
6 Actively serve on the Board of Directors and must attend ¾ of all Board meetings.
7 In conjunction with the Director of Communications and Web Development, develop a reporting system for students who suffer bullying and attacks. (We once had a system with Safe Schools NC but is no longer operating). This system possibly will be used state-wide.
8 In conjunction with the Director of Event Planning, and the Director of Marketing develop a curriculum workshop for Safe Schools. Reach out to Schools System in the area to gain attendance and support.
9 Work with our partner organizations (Equality NC, HRC, and other local Chapters) on School/Student Bullying Legislature, and issues.
Skills
- Equipment and Software Knowledge General office equipment including but not limited to: Personal PC's General Software including but not limited to: Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook) Windows Internet Explorer Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications Education: High School Diploma. Preferred incumbent would have a college degree or working towards a degree in Teaching, Counseling, or Administration. Experience: Two (2) years experience in working with students and school systems. Preferred incumbent would have experience in the public school system. Required Skills: Must be a self-starter, highly organized, and able to work well with Directors at all skill levels in the organization. Needs good knowledge of Microsoft Products and other software. Incumbent must me a committed to the vision and mission of PFLAG and be able to serve as a Board Member. *NOTE: PFLAG Triangle is a Windows Environment* Desired Skills: Must be able to recruit, form, maintain and lead a committee Must be able to work with students of all ages.
