Shelter Overnight Volunteer

Description

The Shelter Overnight Volunteer works with shelter staff to assist in shelter operations ensure basic needs of shelter guests are met for the evening, staff the shelter overnight, and contribute to hospitality, providing a safe and dignified shelter environment. Responsibilities include:

  • Answering the phone and taking messages.
  • Verify identification and distribute mail to shelter guests.
  • Assist guests in becoming acclimated to the shelter; show them their bed location and where supplies are kept.
  • Assist with kitchen duties (serving and preparing meals, lunches, coffee, breakfast, etc.) as needed.
  • Focus on providing positive attitude and hospitality to shelter guests.
  • Enforce shelter policies and procedures.
  • Alert staff when supplies are low, maintenance is needed, or suggestions for shelter operations.
  • Spend the night. Lights out for shelter guests is 10:30 pm on weekdays & Sundays, and 12 midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Volunteers sleep in the same room in separate beds, separate from shelter guests. Men and women restrooms are also separate from the guests. Volunteers are able to sleep approximately 5 hours during their service.
  • Set out coffee and light breakfast in the morning, (about 4 am), wake clients as needed for work and appointments, distribute lunches, and follow documented morning procedures.
  • Log detailed notes regarding overnight shift, with special attention to incidents, inventory/supply issues, and guest's information that will assist staff the next day.
  • Lock up shelter and ensure all clients have left the building.
  • Shelter opens at 5:30 pm, volunteers arrive around 6 pm, (schedule here is easily adjusted to meet each volunteer's special consideration) and shelter closes at 7 am.
