Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum

Tour guides are needed to lead groups through the home of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, Civil War Hero, Governor of Maine and President of Bowdoin College. The tour includes an apartment used by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

As a tour guide, you will have the opportunity to meet and interact with a wide variety of Civil War buffs, Chamberlain fans, and history enthusiasts. You will also be given some freedom in designing your own tour, so that you may focus on whichever subjects most interest you and your audience.

The Chamberlain Museum is open late May through mid October from Tuesday to Saturday, with tours Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays at 10am, 11:30am, 1pm, and 2:30pm. Tour guides work in 3 hour shifts. We are currently recruiting and training for the 2023 season.

Volunteers will receive a tour manual and appropriate training with shadowing other escorts prior to giving a tour on their own. Volunteers must be able to climb stairs and be on their feet for an hour at a time.

All volunteers of the Pejepscot History Center receive benefits such as invitations to all PHC events, free admission to PHC museums, discounts at the museum gift shop, and a recognition party at the end of the season.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to collect, preserve, and interpret the history of Brunswick, Topsham, and Harpswell, Maine, and to share our diverse heritage for the enrichment of all--natives and tourists alike.

Description

The Pejepscot History Center shares the rich history of the mid-coast region with residents and tourists alike. PHC collects, preserves and interprets the history of Brunswick, Topsham, and Harpswell through educational programs, exhibitions, and museums.

Founded in 1888 as Pejepscot Historical Society, (now) Pejepscot History Center is the fourth oldest in the state of Maine. PHC was operated solely by volunteers for much of its existence. It now employs full-time and part-time staff, but still heavily relies on volunteers for its day-to-day operations.

PHC operates three museums: the Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum, the Skolfield-Whittier House, and the Pejepscot Museum. We provide guided tours, educational programs, historical resources and expertise. Additionally, we provide assistance with local history research.
