Not Your Typical Mentoring Opportunity!

ORGANIZATION: Voices for Children

With just 10-15 hours a month, CASAs can make a difference in the life of a child. More than a typical mentor, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) are volunteer advocates for children in foster care, speaking up on their behalf and helping them through what is often a confusing and scary time.

What do CASAs do?

CASAs act as fact-finders for the judges, providing them with information that they may never get otherwise. CASAs gather information from Court documents, social workers’ files, and educational, medical and therapy records. They also speak with the child, family members, school officials, health providers, and other professionals involved in the child’s life. CASAs use this information, as well as firsthand observations, to advocate for the child in Court and school, and in other aspects of their lives. The CASA’s role is to consider what is in the child’s best interest and to make sure that each child’s individual needs are met.

The children we serve have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect, or abandonment. Many feel very much alone--until they meet their CASA. CASAs visit with their case children at least once a month. This provides the children with stability and consistency and allows the CASAs to better understand the needs of the children, as well as the children themselves. Some CASAs build and maintain positive, trusting relationships with their case children, much like mentors.

If you are ready for the role of a lifetime, if you are ready to help create a brighter future for a foster child, contact Voices for Children today! Visit our website at www.speakupnow.org.

About Voices for Children

Location:

2851 Meadow Lark Drive, San Diego, CA 92123, US

Mission Statement

Voices for Children transforms the lives of abused children in San Diego County by providing them with volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs). We believe that every child deserves a safe and permanent home, and to that end, will review and monitor every court file in the system, provide a CASA to every child in the foster care system who needs one, and advocate to improve the lives of San Diego County’s foster children.

Description

CASAs can change the trajectory of a foster child’s life. They focus on an individual child’s needs, working one-on-one with a child or set of siblings. They provide a source of consistency and stability, visiting with their case children at least once a month. CASAs gather information from files and reports and communicate with social workers, family members, school officials, and other professionals in the children’s lives. They use this information and firsthand observations to advocate for the children’s best interests in Court, as well as in other aspects of their lives, such as education, health, and living arrangements. No experience is necessary! We provide all the training you’ll need, as well as a dedicated staff supervisor to partner with you on the case. With just 10-15 hours a month, you can make a difference in the life of a foster child!
