Rainbow Rumpus publishes an online magazine for youth between the ages of four and twenty four who have lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) parents or a connection to the LGBT community.
The site has three main sections: Kids, Young Adults and Parents, Teachers and Friends. The youth sections contain stories, poems, cartoons, letters, essays, photos, artwork,music and video clips, the majority of which feature youth in LGBT headed families. Employment Status: Part-Time Volunteer 8-10 hours a month
Reports to: Editor-in-Chief
Collaborates with: Editorial Team
Supervises: Freelance writers, youth volunteers
Location: Rainbow Rumpus is based in Minneapolis, MN.
OBJECTIVE
o To collaborate with the editorial team in the development of editorial policy and content forthe young adult section of the Rainbow Rumpus site. This section is for young people between the ages of 14 and 24.
o Provide editorial direction for the games,interactive features, reviews, and politics pages
o Conduct interviews with youth
o Writearticles
o Recruitregular columnists for the reviews and political sections, with direction andcontacts given by the editor-in-chief and publisher
o Increase the amount of content submitted to the site by youth
o Support thecreation of a youth-led online community, such as a forum
QUALIFICATIONS
* Writing andediting experience
* Previous experience working with young adults is preferred
* Interest in new media; experience helpful but not necessary
* Interest in children's media; experience helpful but not necessary
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Participate in twice-monthly editorial meetings
• Participate in monthly supervision meetings
• Writearticles
• Recruit and supervise freelance writers and columnists
• Work with young adults to develop content, including interactive content like forums, for the section
• Meet monthly content and editing deadlines
• Contribute to planning for upcoming issues
• Contribute to long-range content development planning
• Contribute to editorial and production process development
