VOLUNTEER TUTORS FOR ADULT LEARNERS -

Thank you for your interest. Currently we do not have any volunteer tutor openings until later in the spring. Please contact us again by May, 2014.


Description of tutoring opportunities:

  • The Write to Read Adult Literacy program opportunities for interested volunteers to coach adult learners to improve their reading, writing, spelling, comprehension skills, and computer skills.

  • Become a tutor by leading a small group (reading & conversation groups) or providing individual adult tutoring at the Alameda County Library branches in Newark, Union City, Castro Valley, San Lorenzo and Dublin as well as in the Ashland area of unincorparated Alameda County (Eden Township Area).

  • Come to a tutor orientation to find out more. All prospective tutors participate in tutor trainings, roundtable discussions, and In-service workshops to support your tutoring skills and develop a community of practice. If you know computers and the internet, you can tutor at one of several computer labs how to set-up email accounts, do internet searches, use spelling and writing software, and access library on-line resources. Many learners are waiting for your help.

Free Adult Tutoring

The Adult Education and Literacy Services offers small learning group instruction, including reading clubs, beginning English classes, citizenship classes, Job Seeking clinics, basic computer skills labs, high school diploma completion and individual tutoring at the Alameda County Library branches in Fremont, Newark, Union City, San Lorenzo, Castro Valley, Ashland Area, Dublin, and Albany, and at several community locations such as housing apartment complexes, community centers, and non-profits organizations.
