Meal Providers

Description

A unique opportunity for individuals and/or groups to provide a crucial supportive role for substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, and Hepatitis prevention classes offered by the Greater Denver Interfaith Alliance (GDIA). This also assists the support group that meets weekly. Many of our participants arrive directly from work. As such, they frequently are unable to eat supper prior to their arrival. Providing a meal for them is an important piece of the program and provides a unique time of community building for participants and facilitators.

Our current prevention programs are: HHRP (Holistic Health Recovery Program) for the re-entry population--this course is 12 weeks in length; SISTA (Sisters Informing Sisters on Topics about AIDS) Program with heterosexual African American women, a 5-week course. The classes are presented in ongoing sessions. We also have a support group for ex-offenders which meets weekly at GDIA.

Volunteers in this capacity donate and deliver food to our participants. The meals are homemade or purchased. Delivery will most often be to GDIA's main office in Denver. Occasionally, the delivery spot will be different as some of the classes are off-site at neighboring churches or mosques. This can be done for one class, for an entire set of classes, on a one-time basis, or ongoing, whatever works best for the volunteers.

Skills

  • Meal preparation: Able to cook, prepare, and/or purchase a meal for 5-20 people (varies per class and evening); and deliver it to the class site.
