When school dismisses on Friday, nearly 13 million children will leave their classrooms, uncertain whether they will have enough food to eat that weekend. One in five American children faces food insecurity - more than the populations of New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago combined. During the school week, most of these children depend on the federal free and reduced meal program their school offers. Sometimes, the meals at school are the only ones they get. When the school closes its doors on Friday afternoon, many children go home to empty cupboards and hunger pangs for 65 hours until they return to school on Monday morning. Who will feed them this weekend?

We will. Due to the dedication of our volunteers throughout the country, children living with food insecurity will benefit from more than 3 million hunger-free weekends this school year.

We seek a Volunteer Program Coordinator(PC) to lead the Blessings in a Backpack program in Owings Mills, Md. The Blessings in a Backpack program feeds 25 children at an area school each weekend. The current Volunteer Program Coordinator is relocating, and we are looking for a replacement to lead the program for the upcoming school year.

The Volunteer Program Coordinator's (PC) role is to order shelf-stable food and coordinate food packing to distribute to approximately 25 children weekly in the Baltimore County School District.

Responsibilities:

  • Place food orders every 2-3 weeks for food delivered to Timber Grove Elementary.
  • Fundraising and food drives to run the program.
  • Recruit a volunteer team for weekly packing and food delivery.
  • Follow the school calendar to prepare extra food for long weekends and vacations.

The current Program Coordinator is willing to train incoming PCs and share best practices, contacts, and files.

About Blessings in a Backpack, Inc.

Location:

4121 Shelbyville Road, Louisville, KY 40207, US

Mission Statement

Blessings in a Backpack mobilizes communities, individuals and resources to provide food on the weekends for elementary school children across America who might otherwise go hungry.

Description

Our Vision:

Every school-aged child in America has the nourishment needed to learn and grow. As a leader in the movement to end childhood hunger, Blessings in a Backpack strives to ensure children do not go hungry on the weekends by empowering individuals and communities to take action.

Why Do We Do It

More than 13 million children in this country are at risk of hunger. The consequences of hunger are much more than a growling stomach. Poor nutrition can result in a weaker immune system, increased hospitalization, lower IQ, shorter attention spans, and lower academic achievement. Federal government programs feed children during the school week, but we also want to ensure they get nutritional meals over the weekend.

How Much Does it Cost?

$150 will feed one child on the weekends for one 36-week school year through the Blessings in a Backpack program. The Results: Nourished Kids Ready to Learn.

Food is an essential building block; in this case, it truly is a blessing, especially to a hungry child!
