Empower Spanish-speaking adults to read and write in their native language.

How You Will Make a Difference

Teaching basic print skills and literacy fundamentals will empower learners to navigate their daily lives using their new reading and writing skills.

Volunteers are needed to:

  • Assist learners in understanding letters, numbers, and basic reading and writing concepts in Spanish
  • Introduce foundational literacy concepts such as phonetics, vocabulary, and sentence structure in Spanish
  • Share information about library services, programs, and use of resources

Commitment/Schedule

Volunteers are asked to commit to at least one hour-long class session plus preparation time per week for a minimum of six months.

Volunteer sessions will be arranged based on your availability and the learners’ needs.

A fingerprint background check, at no cost to you, is required.

Volunteers will receive training and support to ensure they are well-prepared for their role.

Prospective volunteers should:

  • Be fluent in Spanish
  • Have experience in working with non-English-speaking adults
  • Have knowledge and experience in the field of reading instruction and/or language learning
  • Have strong oral communication skills
  • Be dependable, patient, and flexible

Language Skills

  • Bilingual skills in Spanish and English are required

Public libraries in California seek to engage the talents, skills and commitment of volunteers to serve the communities' information and literacy needs. Libraries offer a variety of skilled volunteer opportunities to make a meaningful contribution to library programs, operations, fundraising events and other community engagement functions. Skilled volunteers have opportunities to lead projects, work with teams of staff and volunteers, learn new skills, and have fun.
