Help a Child Learn!

Children's Home & Aid's Rice Child & Family Center provides therapeutic residential treament for children with a history of abuse and neglect. These vulnerable children are often wards of the state, and are learning to develop appropriate relationships with stable and caring adults in order to return to a loving family.

Neglect and frequent moves cause these children to fall far behind academically, and volunteers are needed to assist youth experiencing academic difficulty who are significantly behind their peers and grade level. Help give these children the support and confidence they need to succeed, and the knowlege that their community cares and is willing to help.

Due to the emotional and behavioral challenges these children present, a tutor MUST have experience working with children who are not necessarily enthusiastic about learning, ideally in a teaching/tutoring setting, and be capable of working with children potentially presenting with ADHD and reactive attachment disorder. Because many of our children need general help getting to grade level rather than specific help with homework tutor should be willing to find age/grade level appropriate learning activities for students or devise creative teaching strategies.

Tutors will meet with the child at the Rice Child & Family residential facility in Evanston, which is easily accessible via the Metra and the CTA. We ask that a tutor be willing to commit for at least 7 months of tutoring after being matched with a child - these tutors usually come once or twice a week for an hour.

In order to ensure the safety of our clients and staff, all regularly scheduled volunteers participate in a screening process including an in-person interview, health screen & TB test and fingerprinting background check.
