Position: After-School Volunteer at PPS Middle Schools

Program Area: Race Equity and Social Justice (RESJ) Middle School Mentoring (MSM)

Location: In-person after-school program at George, Roseway Heights, Harrison Park, and Lane Middle Schools.

Schedule: After-school program groups meet once or twice per week, Monday through Thursday, from approximately 3:30PM to 5:30PM

Program Description: RESJ program works with immigrant and refugee K-12 students at Portland Public School District. We serve three multi-dynamic communities: African-Immigrant, Pacific Islander, and Slavic by providing culturally specific after-school programming in four middle schools: George, Roseway Heights, Harrison Park, and Lane.

Position Summary: Our after-school groups provide culturally specific academic support and tutoring to immigrant and refugee students. Volunteers support our culturally specific after-school programs by assisting our bilingual bicultural Academic Advocates in the classroom and on occasional field trips. Volunteers help students with homework, math, science, and literacy lessons, as well as with group games and activities.

Qualifications: No foreign language experience is required, but those with a strong sense of compassion and a good sense of humor are encouraged to apply. In addition, some advanced English writing, math, and science skills are preferable for tutoring at the high school level.

Time Commitment: Volunteers will work from January to June (winter and spring terms).

Requirements:

  • Must be 18 or older
  • Must pass background check
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination
