Thank you for your interest in this volunteering opportunity.

You would be working with students preparing for their high school equivalency (GED or HiSET) tests. Most students are at a basic literacy level. We have evidence-based reading curriculum for several levels of reading. Volunteers get to pick the reading level they will work with after completing a 14.5 hour basic literacy training. The training is self-paced. Once you have completed the self-paced training, you may ask questions at our in-person meeting by appointment. You will have ongoing professional development. The volunteer will be working with two students, maximum, at once.

Description

The DLC provides direct individual and small group instruction in reading, writing, English language, and computer skills to adults and families seeking to improve their education and/or move toward economic self-suffiency. We partner with a number of social service, health, education, and workforce-related organizations and agencies to meet the diverse needs of the Durham community.

  • We are looking for volunteers to commit Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays, for Spring Semester 2024. Our Spring Semester is January to June. These students need consistency with instructors.
