ORGANIZATION: Earthwise Aware

Calling all humans! You can make a difference in our collective understanding of biodiversity and conservation. Earthwise Aware (EwA | www.earthwiseaware.org) will train you to help support national research surrounding the impact of climate change on the life cycles of plants , insects, and more . It is easy, fun, and no experience is needed!

We offer several opportunities at the Middlesex Fells Reservation. We meet on Mondays at 8:30 a.m. at Bellevue Pond (Medford).

Do you like bugs?

We have easy-to-use apps that allow us to gather important data on insects that utilize the plants at the reservation.

Maybe you are a plant lover?

We monitor the phenology of several trees and other perennial native species that are important in the life cycles of native pollinators and other animals.

Interested in pollinators?

Pollinators are crucial to our ecosystem. Help us count the number of pollinators that visit the plants surrounding the pond.

More of the 'big picture' type?

Connect the life cycles of important plant and animal life with each other in the context of a shifting climate.

We are grateful to partner with the Department of Conservation and Recreation to provide a space where we can collect data and contribute to critical national research databases. This helps us understand how we can create better opportunities for biodiversity and increase conservation efforts in an urban environment.

Mission Statement

Earthwise Aware (EwA) runs a conservation participatory science program that supports biodiversity and climate research while advancing the democratization of science. The program covers various urban habitats in Greater Boston and fills essential data gaps that serve local, state, and national needs. The programming, the partnerships, and the integrative and democratic approach to participatory research is a model for other organizations looking to put best practices into effect.

Description

EwA promotes a form of scientific contribution and experiential learning through a participatory science program (a.k.a. citizen science) that is systems-based with an emphasis on in situ species interactions. Together, the program's projects reveal a continuous natural history of local habitats.

EwA participatory scientists utilize technology to collect data that fill critical knowledge gaps. Participatory scientists follow rigorous protocols and use specialized apps to compile robust data about pollinators and their host plants, arthropod and bird abundance, the timing of plant and animal life events, invasive species, essential habitat degradation indicators, and more.
