Team Mentoring for Single Mother Families

Description

Purpose: A mentor provides a TRH participating family with a social network of support, encouragement, accountability and friendship.

Need: 8-12 mentors per single mother family; representing generational and economic diversity, and diversity in family makeup (no single men)

Key Staff Support: TRH Program Coordinator

Qualifications:

  • A Christ follower, and an active member of a local congregation
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Ability to provide unconditional support and friendship to a single parent and her children
  • Demonstrates a willingness to learn along with the participating family
  • Patience and persistence through the inevitable "ups and downs" of mentoring
  • Ability to meet the three key time commitments of the program
  • Supports overall ministry, purpose, and vision of The Restoration House
  • Able to maintain formal commitment for at least 12 months (except for the Mentor Team lead/family liaison, whose commitment is 18 to 24 months)

Three Key Time Commitments:

  • Weekly contact with assigned participating family (phone call, email, letter, etc.)
  • Monthly individual activity with mother and her children (such as watching a movie, play-dates with children, going grocery shopping or other things friends do together)
  • Attend a quarterly gathering sponsored by The Restoration House with participating family and whole mentoring group (designed to strengthen mentoring relationships and provide ongoing training and support from The Restoration House staff)

Mentor Volunteer Support:

  • Three and one-half hours of training prior to meeting the family
  • A staff-facilitated "match night" at which mentors and the family meet
  • Ongoing support and quarterly training by staff throughout the 18 to 24 month program
  • Unlimited staff phone support for mentors

Application Process:

  • Interview with TRH staff
  • Satisfactory criminal background check
  • Complete TRH Mentor Training
  • Placement into mentor group
  • Matched with a participating TRH family
