Do you love to drive or want to help people in need? Did you know that transportation is among one of the most requested services by older adults in Maine? Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) and York County Community Action (YCCAC) are looking to satisfy these requests by recruiting dependable, caring individuals interested in being an active member of their community by providing a reliable transportation service. Volunteer drivers will transport residents from any of the 29 towns in York County to services in and out of the County, as far south as Boston and as far north as Bangor, although the majority of the transportation requests are for appointments within York County and Southern Cumberland County (Scarborough/Portland). Valid Maine driver’s license and a good driving record are a requirement for this role.
When will the volunteer(s) work?: Volunteer hours are flexible and dependent on the individual driver's availability. YCCAC has transportation requests 5 - 7 days per week, typically starting at 7:00am and ending around 5:00pm.
Who will provide the training, and how long will it take?: Initial orientation takes 2-3 hours, additional trainings may range from 4-6 hours. Some of our contracted services mandate trainings which would include, Passenger Assistance, Defensive Driving and Mandated Reporting. NOTE: Volunteer drivers are not required to provide services to individuals whose rides are funded by contracts mandating these trainings.
