BBBSOK is the nations largest mentoring nonprofit, that takes adults, BIGS, and match them with youth, Littles (children, ages 6-16), to form one-to-one mentoring relationships. Being a Big is not only very rewarding and fun but it is also super easy. You don’t have to be an expert, or have any special skills, just help a child discover their potential while having fun. There is several ways to serve: community program (2-4 hours a month, year long), school based (1 hour a week, during school year) or big league (sports events, 6 months, one activity a month).

There is a BIG reason You are needed:

  • There are several waiting Littles
  • The CDC Violence Prevention report finds our program is a solution to combat adverse childhood experience, ACE’s (childhood trauma such as neglect, abuse, etc.)
  • As a Big you can nurture a child and strengthen a community
  • Our program is designed to help children develop resiliency by having a stable and supportive adult in their life

The results are BIG:

  • 95% of Littles have improved their academic performance due to their connection to a Big
  • 98% of Littles finish high school
  • 100% avoid police or juvenile justice systems
  • 97% avoid substance abuse/use

Those are Big results! When I was younger I benefited from a caring, supportive adult in my life. I am sure you also could think of an adult who supported you while you were younger, please consider doing the same for another as a Big. We will interview you and match you to a Little with similar interests and likes, also we will support you throughout the match. Please let me know if you have any questions, I am happy to help. And thank you for becoming a BIG!

About Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma

Location:

Mission Statement

As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer-supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma matches volunteer mentors (Bigs) with children (Littles) who need help with self-esteem, decision-making, and other areas of life. Our mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

Description

Our Programs Start Something. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma provides mentors to almost two-thousand children across the state. Unlike many other mentoring organizations, BBBSOK provides a trained, full-time staff that works to ensure matches are perfect both for the mentor and the mentee by initiating a thorough interview process and providing support throughout the life of the match. With BBBSOK's research-proven model and four hours of volunteer mentoring a month, children’s lives are changed.

Big Impact, Proven Results: Independent research shows Littles who remain matched for a year are more confident in their academic and social lives and are significantly less likely to use illegal drugs.

Ways to Get Involved! At BBBSOK, we offer two core programs: school-based mentoring and community-based. With school-based mentoring, a volunteer Big meets once a week with their Little, usually during lunch. During this time, the Big and Little develop strong relationships by working on homework, eating together, or just hanging out. In the traditional community-based program, the Big and Little get together on their own time to share fun activities they both enjoy. Community-based mentoring is a few fun hours a month doing low-cost activities you'd likely already be doing!
