The role of an Emergency Department Navigator volunteer is to provide non-clinical assistance to Emergency Department (ED) patients and staff by offering emotional support to patients (and their families) and helping with non-clinical tasks. Volunteers assist in the main ED, Fast Track treatment area and the main waiting area. Volunteers provide a liaison service for patients and family members awaiting emergency medical service. The Department of Volunteer Services gives general orientation including Safety, Infection Control, Patients' Rights, HIPAA and other important information. Emergency Department Nursing staff provides orientation to patient care and on-the-job instruction. While on duty, the volunteer is required to wear a volunteer vest provided by the Department of Volunteer Services.

Description

Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, located in the East Flatbush section of Central Brooklyn, was founded in 1925 as a chronic care facility to serve the then Jewish Community within a cultural context. As the community has evolved and diversified, Kingsbrook has expanded its services and programs, to meet the needs of the large culturally diverse communities that it now serves.

Kingsbrook is an 864-bed medical training institution, comprised of a 326-bed acute care hospital and a 538-bed adult and pediatric skilled nursing long-term care facility. In addition to its celebrated David Minkin Rehabilitation Institute, Kingsbrook's Centers of Excellence include Brooklyn's only NYS licensed Traumatic Brain Injury and Coma Recovery Unit, and a Geriatric Inpatient Psychiatry service, a premiere program serving the mentally challenged elderly throughout the borough.
