Description
A Disaster Action Team (DAT) is a team of trained Red Cross volunteers sent to the scene of a local disaster with the chapter area to provide immediate relief to victims and emergency workers. Disaster Services Human Resources (DSHR) volunteers ease the difficulties of people unexpectedly overwhelmed nationally by large scale devastation. You might be called on to assess disaster damage, staff an emergency shelter, serve food, interview disaster victims, counsel and comfort disaster victims, provide first aid, handle inquiries from relatives, drive vehicles, operate communications systems, take inventory and keep records, work long hours. Disaster volunteers are needed in all of the Middlesex Central CT Chapter's communities.
Skills
Free emergency relief training is required. Must be 18 years or older, in good health and willing to work hard. A background check is required. Attendance to training classes as well as special sessions, regular meetings and drills necessary. Must be available to be "On Call" evenings and/or day times and weekends one week per month. A listing of disaster volunteer training classes is found on our chapter website at www.midredcross.org. Introduction to Disaster Services class is prerequisite for all other disaster training and must be taken online - link is found on our website.
