What you will do: You will work to assemble tasteful healthy meals from the rescued food donation into individual meal trays. Fill out an application on www.foodforfree.org/volunteer, then sign up for a shift here- https://foodforfree.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=60576

Food For Free’s Heat-N-Eats Program uses rescued food from area university and corporate dining halls and repackages it into balanced, healthy meals, each comprised of protein, starch, and vegetables. The very same mixed vegetables, brown rice, salmon, lasagna or chicken that would have gone to compost are instead flash frozen, split up, and sealed into microwaveable trays. The frozen meals are then distributed by Food For Free to various partner agencies with an emphasis on educational institutions (ie. community colleges, schools, and service agencies). Our volunteer meal packers are the lifeline of the Heat-N-Eats program!

About FOOD FOR FREE

Location:

11 INMAN ST, CAMBRIDGE, MA 02139, US

Mission Statement

Good Food, Healthy Communities. We believe access to healthy food is a fundamental right. Our mission is to improve access to healthy food within our community by rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste and creating new distribution channels to under-served populations with an emphasis on utilizing school systems to reach those in need. We envision a future where everyone in our community - regardless of age, income, or ability - has consistent access to fresh, healthy, delicious food.

Description

Through a combination of food rescue and transportation services, we give food programs year-round access to fresh fruits and vegetables, while our direct service programs bring food to students, seniors, and others most at risk of hunger. Our programs address not only short-term hunger but also the long-term health effects of food insecurity and poor nutrition while reducing food waste. We have over 250 active volunteers who have donated over 10,000 hours since the Pandemic hit. We distributed a total of 4.2 million pounds of Food- reaching thousands of households in Massachusetts

Our current volunteer opportunities include the Just Eats Box Packing Program, Field of Greens and the Home Delivery Program. We offer Weekday and Weekend opportunities and welcome group volunteers.
