ORGANIZATION: Chartiers Center

  • 48 people are interested

Chartiers offers social groups for intellectually disabled adults. The focus of the groups is to spend time with others in a social setting away from family. Each group meets one night a week. The groups are run Monday night, Wednesday night and Friday night. Each group is different, but all three meet in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. In addition to socialization, one group goes bowling, and the others play games, make crafts, sing karaokee, go to the movies, out to dinner and during the summer take in mini-golf etc. The activity, or focus of the group, is pre determined by the staff and participants. Volunteers are assigned to work with a small group of individuals and oversee their participation in the activity. New volunteers are partnered with veteran volunteers until they are familiar with the needs of the group. (Volunteers may volunteer every week or twice a month based on their schedule.)

The volunteer site, date and time are all determined by the volunteers availability (day of week) and the needs of the group. The Monday night group meets near Caste Village, the Wednesday night group bowls in Mt. Lebanon and the Friday night teen/young adult group meets in Dormont and spends a lot of time in the community.

Wouldn't you like to volunteer and share a little of yourself with our folks? This is a great opportunity for college students pursuing an education or special education degree. Gain great hands on experience!
