Habitat Restoration at Jeronimo Creek Open Space in Mission Viejo

6-3-12, 9AM to 12PM

Come assist Back to Natives in restoring habitat in Jeronimo Creek Open Space in Mission Viejo. We will meet at the location to remove weeds and assist our native plantings and seeding to thrive. Everyone is invited - children younger than 14 must be accompanied by a parent. Bring gloves, sunscreen, water, snacks, hat, and closed toed shoes. Mission Statement

To encourage and actively participate in the restoration and conservation of Orange County and California wildlands, through education and restoration programs featuring native plants and biodiversity as a centralizing theme.

Description

To encourage and actively participate in the restoration and conservation of Orange County and California wildlands, through education and restoration programs featuring native plants and biodiversity as a centralizing theme.

  • Restore and preserve open space (private and publicly held lands). Assisting appropriate agencies in the acquisition of open space, by funding when available, to be owned and managed by appropriate agencies which will ensure the preservation of that open space. Restoration projects will include, when appropriate, community outreach and education components. Restoration projects will provide opportunities for the public to volunteer, and become involved in the actual process of habitat restoration, at actual restoration sites as contracted. Restoration projects will be funded by grants, membership fees and donations or by the site's land manager.
  • When funding is available, provide Land Managers with curriculum aligned with federal and state science and social science standardsdeveloped specifically for their site. When there is interest, and funding is available, provide training for staff and volunteers to assist them in interpreting the curriculum.

  • Promote volunteerism to land stewardship groups, to provide assistance with restoration of lands entrusted to Orange County Parks and Recreation, the State Parks system, The United States Forest Service and other Federal lands as well as privately held lands. Encourage volunteer participation in interpretation, education and restoration at the many facilities.
  • Assist local schools and public facilities with the integration of native plant/habitat curriculum, and provide service learning opportunities and guidance through the service learning process.
  • Encourage and assist private residences in the use of Native Plants and Native Plant Gardening for water conservation and Habitat Gardening.
  • Encourage and assist Home Owner's Associations in the use of Native Plants and Native Plant Gardening for water conservation and Habitat Gardening.
  • Encourage and assist Commercial Business Properties in the use of Native Plants and Native Plant Gardening for water conservation and Habitat Gardening.
  • Encourage private residences, Commercial Business Properties, Home Owner's Associations, Schools and Land Managers to reduce the use of pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides to reduce runoff pollution and secondary effects by these substances.
Encourage, train and educate landscape maintenance organizations to properly care for and maintain native plant and tree landscaping.
