Each year, more than 270 metro-area volunteers assist Milwaukee Achiever's professional staff with one-on-one tutoring. They are paraprofessional tutors, trained and supervised by our teaching staff to provide personalized, planned instruction and mentoring to a carefully selected learning partner.

Our volunteer tutors include corporate executives, assembly line workers, retired professionals, trained educators, professionals from all fields, and successful, change-oriented citizens. This positive relationship benefits not only the learners, but also the tutors. As our community volunteers participate in cross-generational and cross-cultural teaching, they, too, broaden their horizons and develop positive attitudes to better relate to people from diverse cultural, economic, and social backgrounds.

Volunteers offer their time and talent in the following areas: tutoring, fundraising, assisting with administrative or maintenance tasks, and providing professional and legal services.

Volunteers are needed in all areas, especially tutoring. Volunteers willing to become tutors of adult learners are asked to make a minimum commitment of two hours per week for six months.

Free training is provided on a flexible training schedule.

About Milwaukee Achiever Literacy Services

Location:

1215 South 45th Street, West Milwaukee, WI 53214, US

Mission Statement

Milwaukee Achiever's mission is to provide education, life skills training and workforce development instruction for adult learners in an atmosphere of mutual acceptance and respect. Learners and volunteers are inspired and empowered to enrich their lives and their communities.

Description

Milwaukee Achiever has a twenty-eight year history in the Milwaukee community. The organization was founded in 1983, when Alverno College, Cardinal Stritch University, and Mount Mary College responded to a 1982 educational needs assessment called "Milwaukee 2000," which found one of every six Milwaukee residents to be functionally illiterate and unable to obtain meaningful information from the written word. Today, one of every five Milwaukee residents is considered functionally illiterate.

Milwaukee Achiever specializes in programs designed to provide Adult Basic Education (ABE), GED/HSED preparation, English Language Learning (ELL), basic computer skills, job readiness and pre-vocational training, and college and business preparatory writing skills.

To date, Milwaukee Achiever has successfully served over 18,000 highly motivated adults who identify education as the key to lift themselves out of poverty and begin self-directed, productive lives. Approximately 1,900 adult learners annually seek our services at one of our neighborhood centers. Milwaukee Achiever does no formal advertising; yet the demand for our programs continues to increase, affirming the need for adult education and workforce development training in the heart of the Milwaukee community.
