ORGANIZATION: Foster Grandparent Program

You can provide the support a children needs to succeed. Foster Grandparents work with a teacher to provide academic and social assistance to students one-on-one and in small groups. Sturgis Elementary provides a full education to students from kindergarten to fifth grade, so there are volunteer opportunities to fit a variety of interests. Volunteers help younger students with emerging literacy skills, number development, artistic expression and fine and gross motor skills. They help older children by serving as an attentive audience with reading and by assisting them to better understand academic concepts. Foster Grandparents serve as mentors and positive role models to all ages by providing support, direction and comfort, which increases a child's confidence and self-esteem.

An hourly stipend and other benefits are provided for volunteers. The stipend is tax free and does not affect eligibility for any benefits of assistance.
