I CARE is an interfaith nonprofit serving DeKalb County seniors who, for financial and medical reasons, have no other means of transportation to medical appointments. The riders value both the access to health care and the caring companionship provided by the volunteers, many of whom are recent retirees. For volunteers, I CARE creates an opportunity to share themselves through not only their time and service, but also through reaching out and sharing themselves with others. Some volunteers drive once a week or more, others on an occasional basis - all are needed and appreciated. State law protects the volunteers from liability, and I CARE also carries excess auto insurance.
Volunteers select the days, times, and frequency they are able to drive. The office calls in advance with ride requests. Based on the estimated appointment length, location, etc., the volunteer is free to accept or decline each drive. Most clients live in South DeKalb Co: Decatur, Stone Mountain, Lithonia, etc. Normally, the driver escorts the patient into the medical office, and waits to drive him or her home. Riders must be able to walk to and from the car. A rider comments: "The volunteers I have met have been the most friendly, caring, and supportive people I have met in my 80 years." A volunteer: "Driving for I CARE is one of the most rewarding things I do." I CARE volunteers make a difference!
