The Nature Conservancy's Hassayampa River Preserve is a 730-acre protected desert cottonwood/willow riparian forest that attracts over 280 species of birds and supports diverse plant and animal communities. It includes over 3 miles of trails. The visitor center was once part of the 1860s Brill Ranch and is listed on the AZ State Register of Historic Places.
Volunteer Needs:
Visitor Center Hosts: Welcome visitors from around the world to the preserve and introduce them to the Conservancy and the natural and human history of the preserve. Desired commitment of 1-2 shifts per month. Shifts are: Sept. 14-May 13, Wed.-Sun., 8 am - 12:30 pm or 12:30 - 5 pm. Training provided.
Preserve Stewards: Maintain, reroute, and stabilize trails, clear brush, repair fencing, remove invasive plants, maintain the desert garden. Desired commitment of 1-2 shifts per month. Shifts are: Sept. 14-May 13, Sat. 8 am - noon.
Trail Docents: Lead adult and student groups on interpretive nature walks within the preserve to provide a high quality experience. Tours are scheduled Wed.-Sat. as requested. Training provided.
Administrative: Assist with general office tasks, the quarterly newsletters and event publicity.Assist with planning and organizing classes and special events. Flexible schedule.
The preserve is open during the during the winter (mid. Sept.-mid. May) Wed. - Sun., 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. summer Fri.-Sun., 7-11 a.m.
