About Colorado Hebrew Chorale

Location:

495 S. Jersey St., Denver, CO 80224, US

Mission Statement

The Colorado Hebrew Chorale was organized in September 1993 by its Music Director, Carol Kozak Ward, to preserve, promote, perform and celebrate the richness of Hebrew choral music throughout the Rocky mountain region.

Description

Since its inception, this highly dedicated volunteer chorus, whose membership draws from all areas within greater Denver, has literally given voice to the legacy and culture of the Jewish experience through song. Now entering its fourteenth season, the Colorado Hebrew Chorale retains its commitment to communal service as its raison d'ĂȘtre.

The Colorado Hebrew Chorale has participated in a wide array of multicultural events, including A Taste of Colorado, the Colorado Performing Arts Festival, Sacred Celebration!, First Night Colorado, and programs featuring Jewish and Muslim entertainment. Holiday performances of the Chorale's inaugural season at Shalom Park and the Allied Jewish Apartments, together with annual ecumenical Thanksgiving performances, Holocaust Remembrance, and Israeli Memorial Day and Israeli Independence Day tributes are mainstays of their ongoing involvement. The outreach arm of the Colorado Hebrew Chorale has also extended to public schools, college campuses, synagogues, and churches. Similarly, the numerous collaborations of the Colorado Hebrew Chorale have included performances with the Colorado Chorale, the Colorado Mormon Chorale, the Mizel Museum, the Colorado Choir, the Columbine Chorale, the Boulder Chorale, the choirs of Augustana Lutheran Church (Denver), St. Frances Cabrini Church (Littleton), Christ Congregational Church (Denver), the Denver Pops, the Westminster Symphony, the Musica Sacra Orchestra, and the Yale University Glee Club. Distinctive programs are another hallmark of the activities of the Colorado Hebrew Chorale. From Judas Maccabaeus community sings to "Music, Movies and Memories", the Colorado Hebrew Chorale has brought together performers and audiences alike, seeking enrichment in a broader cultural context. Other unique events have included Israeli composer Tzvi Avni offering a lecture-demonstration with the Chorale, mini-concerts on 9News and for the sneak preview of the Holocaust film Train of Life, and the evening of Hebrew round-singing in the Sukkah. Two important milestones of the Chorale's history are its appearance in the soundtrack of the PBS documentary We Were There: American-Jewish Liberators of the Nazi Concentration Camps, and its appearance at the 1994 plenary session of the General Assembly of the Council of Jewish Federations, which featured a keynote address by the late Israeli Prime Minister, Yitzchak Rabin. Most recently, the Chorale was honored to again appear at the 2011 General Assembly. The Chorale also represented the region in Jerusalem 3000 events as part of its 1996 concert tour of Israel.
