Local residents are encouraged to help plan or participate in one of the more than 95 American Cancer Society Relay For Life events planned in cities and towns throughout Massachusetts this year. Community members are needed to serve as planning committee members, volunteers, team captains, and/or team members.

Relay For Life is the Society’s largest signature fundraising event that offers communities an opportunity to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones lost to the disease, and fight back against cancer. Relays are 12 to 24 hours in length and go overnight. Teams of 8 to 15 people raise money in advance and camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking, jogging, or running around a track or path. Teams are encouraged to camp out in tents and enjoy the great music, food, and camaraderie of the event.

Funds raised at Relay For Life are enabling the American Cancer Society to impact the lives of those touched by cancer within the community by supporting vital, cutting-edge cancer research; providing cancer patients with services such as transportation to treatment, free lodging at our Hope Lodge, and round the clock support at our national cancer information center available at 1-800-227-2345 anytime, day or night; publishing lifesaving literature on cancer prevention, detection and tobacco control; and developing a new generation of medicines that help those battling cancer.

For more information or to volunteer at an American Cancer Society Relay For Life event in your community, please call 1-800-227-2345 or visit relayforlife.org.

Mission Statement

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

Description

The American Cancer Society is a global grassroots force of 2.5 million volunteers saving lives and fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. As the largest voluntary health organization, the Society's efforts have contributed to a 22 percent decline in cancer death rates in the US during the past two decades, and a 50 percent drop in smoking rates. Thanks in part to our progress nearly 14.5 million Americans who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will celebrate more birthdays this year. We're determined to finish the fight against cancer. As the nation's largest private, not-for-profit investor in cancer research, we're finding cures and ensuring people facing cancer have the help they need and continuing the fight for access to quality health care, lifesaving screenings, clean air, and more. For more information, to get help, or to join the fight, visit cancer.org or call us anytime, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345.
