What is the Based on Books program? Based on Books brings community volunteers and our early learning providers together to promote early literacy to children. The Early Learning Coalition of the Big Bend Region provides training for volunteers and equips them with a complete literacy kit to take to childcare centers and family childcare homes. The kits contain a book, a lesson plan, and materials needed for supplementary activities. Everything the volunteer needs is included in the kit.
How do I become a Based on Books volunteer? Call the Early Learning Coalition office and let us know you are interested. We hold orientations twice a month that are mandatory for all volunteers
What are the specifics of being a Based on Books volunteer? You will be assigned to a childcare center or family childcare home and will have the same small group of children (ages 4 and 5) each week. The program commitment is to visit with your group once a week for 8 weeks. Typically, a visit lasts one to one and a half hours. You will need to have transportation to and from the Early Learning Coalition office to pick up the literacy kits and to get to your assigned center/family childcare home.
How does volunteering benefit the children? Your visits will be a treat to the children. They will bond with you while learning the skills they need for kindergarten. Your volunteering time will also benefit the Coalition by providing match dollars to help the school readiness children continue with their care.
