Adult ESL Reading Tutor (Mornings)
Organization |
Description
Our pre-literacy level class serves recently arrived adult immigrants and refugees (mostly from East Africa) who, generally, have little or no experience with reading and writing in any language.
As these students learn the letters and sounds of English, they can greatly benefit from practicing their reading/decoding skills with a patient and friendly tutor. As a volunteer, you will be supervised/supported by our pre-literacy level teacher. All lessons and materials will also be provided.
This is a great opportunity for anyone who is interested in learning more about the process of learning to read, anyone who wants to get experience with tutoring and ESL, and anyone who is enthusiastic about helping immigrants and refugees adjust to their new life in Minnesota.
The class meets Monday through Friday, from 9:00AM to 12:00AM, and you can help out at any time within that interval. You can volunteer for one hour a week, one class a week, or more!
If you're interested, please contact Rachel, volunteer coordinator, at (612) 338-5282 ext. 217 or VolunteerAtCedarRiverside@yahoo.com. For other volunteer opportunities, and for information about our program as a whole, please check out http://cr.themlc.org
Skills
- Patience and friendliness are, of course, necessary. An interest in reading and/or ESL is a definite plus.
