VITAS wants to enlist your services to care for veteran patients! These men and women who have served our country deserve respect and dignity. Be part of the volunteer group who provides it. We visit them wherever they live;at home, nursing homes, assisted living communities and medical centers. We have a general volunteer training with extra training for our Veteran volunteers. You can serve in many ways; VITAS Veteran Volunteers do not need to be U.S. Veterans; However, all volunteers need the desire to remember; honor and support America's living heroes.

VITAS Veteran Volunteers visit terminally ill veterans; drive and/or accompnay a veteran to appointments, shopping and other events; learn about available assistance; help replace lost or stolen military medals by contacting appropriate agencies; listen to life stories or record veteran's reminiscences; telephone veterans to ask how they are doing; attend or help plan activities celebrating Memorial Day and Veteran's Day; educate veteran's groups about hospice services by speaking at their meeting.

Mission Statement

VITAS Healthcare recognizes the importance of a strong and innovative program. Volunteers are an integral part of the hospice program, allowing VITAS to continue personalizing, enhancing and expanding services offered to patients and families. By exemplifying the VITAS Values, volunteers serve as patient and family advocates and are proactive in meeting the needs of patients and families. VITAS integrates volunteers into the hospice team by actively recruiting, training, supporting, and creatively utilizing volunteers to meet patient and family needs. Volunteers and their contributions are respected and valued.

Description

Volunteers are the heart of VITAS, providing friendly, non-medical direct patient and family care, such as socialization, companionship, outings, playing music, singing, life reviews, light massage, caregiver relief or bereavement assistance to family and friends. We have special trainings and shadowing opportunities so that you are well equipped to begin your patient care visit in advance.

For those interested in volunteering in an administrative role, we have a place for you too! Non-patient support roles include office assistance via data inputting, filing and making packets or check in calls to patients and caregivers. (Enlist a friend and you come into the office together!) If you're a seamstress, making Memory Bears and other items for patients is welcomed. We are always open to new ideas too! So, just give us a call and we can figure out a way to meet your volunteer goals.
