ORGANIZATION: Passion Spark Retreats (Segue Career Mentors)

Each Team Leader for the Segue Career Guidance Program interfaces with one local high school (10-15 hours per week) and becomes the Segue ambassador to that school for at least one year. Segue helps youths help themselves, take responsibility for where their lives are headed, choose productive careers, and keep off life's negative paths, welfare, and prison Segue mobilizes a community to show its youth the way forward. Volunteers from the workforce reinforce career path realities in students' classrooms up to 10 or more times a year for each student. Different speakers describe a wide range of career paths and ways that students can explore those careers and prepare for them. Speaker sign-up is quick due to Segue's unique online self-scheduling. Segue supports students at a most critical crossroads by helping them decide what to do with their lives - and to see that what they do, now, can be of great benefit to them in their future. Segue helps make school relevant to students! Segue's mission is accomplished by causing speakers from a community to come into high school classrooms and share with students their career path stories and realities of what it takes to start and progress along a career path (for all careers such as carpenters, doctors, engineers, and chefs). The role of the Team Leader is found in three areas: (1) engaging the community for speaker participation; (2) engaging its school for teacher participation; and (3) some interfacing with school administrators. Speakers are found in such groups as Rotary, Kiwanis, and other service clubs, Chambers of Commerce, professional associations, the PTA, city offices, Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts, and in many other groups. To learn more about Segue and how to become involved, please contact Jerry Beckerman by phone (805 643 3444) or email (jerryb@SegueProgram.org; use "SEGUE" as subject line). The website is www.SegueProgram.org. Thank you very much.

Mission Statement

To guide people to introspect deeply and connect with their passions, choose one, and then match it to a career for a fulfilling life where people self-empower themselves do what they love AND earn a good living.

Description

The history of Passion Spark began with Segue Career Guidance Program, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which shares the same core mission as Segue, "To inform students today to support their career successes tomorrow." Now, under contract to Segue, Passion Spark engages students at a much deeper level and over a substantially greater time period. Specifically, Passion Spark's Retreat Workshops occur over 20 hours, whereas Segue's in-class career speakers presented for just 20 minutes. Passion Spark guides participants to "Do what you love and also earn a good living." It also serves a broader population of participants as described on this website's home page.

The impacts of the Passion Spark Retreat can be seen in the expressions of its participants at these links: http://www.PassionSpark.org/student-voices-video and http://PassionSpark.org/career-experts-and-students

Historically, Segue provided over 90,000 Student Career Exposures (SCEs; one SCE is one exposure to one career option by one live in-class speaker). Segue produced outstanding outcomes as measured by Harvard University and California Lutheran University, as well as by student and teacher testimonials. See the "History" at PassionSpark.org.

Segue was highly regarded in the community, as described in a 4-minute summary video by a Superior Court Judge, and others, as shown at this link: http://www.passionspark.org/segue-video
