ORGANIZATION: Foster Grandparent Program

Foster Grandparents provide educational, social, and emotional support to children in schools, Head Start, after school programs, cultural centers and residential group homes. Volunteers serve an average of 20 hours per week (can do 15-40 hours per week) and, in turn, an hourly stipend*, transportation reimbursement, paid orientation & training, paid holidays, earn vacation & sick leave, site provided meal (when available), supplemental accident and personal liability insurance, annual recognition, companionship with fellow seniors, and the fulfillment of fostering hope in the eyes of a child!

*The stipend volunteers receive from the program is tax free and does not affect any other benefits or assistance a grandparent may already receive.

Description

The Foster Grandparent Program is based out of Sturgis, South Dakota and currently covers 14 counties in western SD (Bennett, Butte , Custer, Fall River , Haakan, Harding, Jackson, Lawrence, Meade, Mellette, Pennington, Perkins, Shannon and Todd) .

We place income eligible senior citizens (age 55 and over) with children in settings such as elementary schools, head starts, child care centers, pre-school programs, and after school programs to do volunteer work with children. Foster Grandparent volunteers serve an average of 20 hours per week (can do 15-40 hours per week) and, in turn, receive an hourly tax-free stipend, transportation reimbursement or assistance, paid orientation & training, paid holidays, earn vacation & sick leave, site provided meal (when available), supplemental accident and personal liability insurance, annual recognition, companionship with fellow seniors, and the fulfillment of fostering hope in the eyes of a child!
